Pipe Schedule and Wall Thickness Explained

Pipe Schedule and Wall Thickness Explained

A 2 inch pipe is not two inches across. Understanding what NPS, schedule numbers and the STD / XS / XXS designations actually encode is the difference between an order that arrives right and one that arrives 18 percent short on wall.

NPS is a name, not a measurement

The most persistent confusion in pipe procurement is the belief that a 2 inch pipe is two inches across. It is not. Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) is a dimensionless designator. A 2 inch pipe has an outside diameter of 60.3 mm, which is 2.375 inch.

The historical reason is straightforward. In the nineteenth century pipe was sized by its approximate inside diameter for one particular wall thickness. As stronger steels allowed thinner walls and more thickness options appeared, the mills held the outside diameter constant so that threads, flanges and fittings would still fit, and let the bore vary instead. The name stuck; the measurement drifted.

For any given NPS the outside diameter is fixed. Changing the schedule changes the wall thickness and therefore the bore — never the OD.

Above NPS 14 the designator and the OD finally agree: NPS 14 is 14 inch (355.6 mm) OD, NPS 24 is 24 inch (610 mm) OD, and so on. It is only the small bores that carry the historical mismatch.

Dimensions to ASME B36.10M for carbon and alloy steel pipe. Stainless steel pipe follows ASME B36.19M, which adds the 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S schedules.

Where the schedule number comes from

The schedule number originates in Barlow's formula. It approximates 1000 × P/S, where P is the internal service pressure and S is the allowable stress of the material. A higher schedule therefore encodes a higher pressure capability for the same nominal size.

Because it is a ratio rather than an absolute thickness, the same schedule number produces very different walls at different diameters. Schedule 40 at NPS 1/2 is 2.77 mm; Schedule 40 at NPS 24 is 17.48 mm. Both are "Sch 40" and they have almost nothing in common dimensionally.

STD, XS and XXS — the older naming

Before schedule numbers, three wall classes were used: Standard (STD), Extra Strong (XS) and Double Extra Strong (XXS). These names remain in daily use and are not interchangeable with schedule numbers across the whole size range:

  • STD equals Sch 40 up to and including NPS 10; above that STD is fixed at 9.53 mm regardless of diameter
  • XS equals Sch 80 up to and including NPS 8; above that XS is fixed at 12.70 mm
  • XXS has no schedule equivalent at all and must be looked up directly in ASME B36.10M

This is a genuine source of ordering errors. At NPS 12, someone who writes "STD" meaning "Sch 40" will receive 9.53 mm wall instead of 10.31 mm. On a pressure calculation that margin can matter.

The S schedules for stainless steel

ASME B36.19M covers stainless steel pipe and introduces 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S. Because austenitic stainless has better corrosion resistance, no corrosion allowance is normally added, so thinner walls are practical. Note that 40S and 40 are identical up to NPS 10, and 80S and 80 are identical up to NPS 8 — but they diverge above those sizes. Always confirm which standard the quotation is written against.

Tolerances you should expect

  • Wall thickness: −12.5% is the standard mill tolerance for seamless pipe. Design calculations must use the minimum wall, not the nominal.
  • Outside diameter: typically ±1% for larger sizes, with tighter absolute limits on small bores.
  • Length: Single Random is 4–7 m, Double Random is 7–13 m. Cut lengths are made to order.
  • Straightness and ovality: per the governing product specification.

The −12.5% tolerance is the one that catches people out. If your calculation requires 8.0 mm of pressure-retaining wall, ordering nominal 8.18 mm (Sch 40 at NPS 8) leaves you short once the mill tolerance is applied. Either specify a minimum wall on the order or step up a schedule.

Tube is a different system entirely

Pipe is ordered by NPS and schedule. Tube is ordered by actual outside diameter and actual wall thickness, or by OD and gauge (BWG or SWG). A 2 inch tube really is 50.8 mm across. Heat exchanger, instrumentation and mechanical tubing all follow the tube convention. Mixing the two systems on one enquiry is a common and expensive error — state clearly which you mean.

Getting the order right first time

A complete pipe enquiry carries: specification and grade, NPS and schedule (or OD and wall for tube), the dimensional standard (B36.10M or B36.19M), length requirement, end finish, quantity in metres or pieces, certification type and destination. If your design depends on a minimum wall rather than a nominal wall, say so explicitly — it is a stock selection decision that cannot be made after despatch.

Sarovar Tube Industries stocks seamless and welded pipe from NPS 1/8 inch to 24 inch across schedules 10 to XXS in carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and titanium, with dimension charts on every product page.
